Western Growers Congratulates Alex Padilla on Senate Appointment
SACRAMENTO, CA - As Vice President-elect Kamala Harris prepares to step into her new role, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced his appointment of the individual who will take over her Senate seat. Governor Newsom revealed yesterday that Alex Padilla, who has held public office since 1999, will serve for the final two years of Harris’ term.
“I am honored and humbled by the trust placed in me by Governor Newsom, and I intend to work each and every day to honor that trust and deliver for all Californians,” Padilla said in a statement, according to The New York Times. “From those struggling to make ends meet to the small businesses fighting to keep their doors open to the health care workers looking for relief, please know that I am going to the Senate to fight for you. We will get through this pandemic together and rebuild our economy in a way that doesn’t leave working families behind.”
Padilla formerly occupied the role of California Secretary of State, and will be the first Latino individual from California to serve in a Senate seat.
In response to the appointment, Western Growers President and CEO Dave Puglia issued a statement to applaud the Governor’s decision.
“On behalf of Western Growers, we congratulate Alex Padilla on this new opportunity and look forward to working with him and his team to address the many challenges facing the California growers and processors who provide the most nutritious and responsibly produced fresh produce in the world,” said Puglia. “The next Congress will have opportunities to work in the spirit of compromise on tough issues, including immigration reform, trade policy, water infrastructure, and much more. As a state legislator, Alex Padilla consistently listened to all stakeholders and gave serious weight to the facts. These qualities will serve California well as he takes his place in the U.S. Senate.”
We at ANUK also extend our congratulations to Senator Alex Padilla, and look forward to how this appointment will shape the future of our industry.
