SALISBURY, NC - Throughout the pandemic, food insecurity has been exacerbated, leaving many across the United States searching for nutritious meal options. Luckily, organizations across the retail and produce industries have stepped up to do their part, including Shuman Farms, which was recently honored by Food Lion Feeds with a 2022 Feedys Award.

Kevin Durkee, Manager, Food Lion Feeds“One of Food Lion Feeds’ visions is a world where no one is hungry or must choose between dinner and rent or gas and groceries—where we all pull together to set families up for success in life,” said Kevin Durkee, Manager, Food Lion Feeds. “Each individual and organization honored navigated challenges, embraced uncertainty, and allowed it to propel them forward. They went above and beyond to support the unique needs of our neighbors, and it’s important to us that we honor and appreciate these incredible partners.”

Already in its seventh year, the annual event recognizes those who dedicate their time and skills to providing deals, education, resources, and hope to those dealing with food uncertainty in the communities that Food Lion serves. According to a release, Shuman was given The Grand Lion Award this year, presented to a supplier that has shown outstanding commitment to partnering with and participating in Food Lion Feeds hunger-relief projects.

Through various charitable projects and programs, Shuman Farms has donated over 12 million meals to Feeding America since 2002. The grower also established the Healthy Family Project initiative, encouraging the produce industry to unite to create a healthier generation while raising money for community outreach.
