CASTROVILLE, CA - Purple signifies royalty, and Ocean Mist® Farms is bringing one highly regarded offering to store shelves. The grower’s proprietary purple artichokes are now available for a limited time only.

Back for a fourth consecutive year, this variety is said to have top-quality flavor and appearance. Ocean Mist has cultivated artichoke varieties in California for nearly 100 years, and the purple artichoke variety was developed to enjoy alongside the lineup of traditional green varieties.

Characteristics of the purple artichokes include a vibrant purple exterior that, when cooked, may transform into shades of green and purple depending on seasoning and cooking method; the look and flavor of a Mediterranean old-world variety; tender, meaty leaves; and a rich, earthy artichoke flavor, a press release explained.

Sizes 12 and 18 will be the first purple artichokes harvested at the start of the season before the company transitions to a medium size to fit into the 4 ct clamshell it offers. This will be in addition to the loose artichokes with a tag.

Ocean Mist expects the heaviest production period to be February 20 through April 23.
