Organics Unlimited’s GROW Disaster Relief Fund Deployed to Help Communities and Workers

SAN DIEGO, CA - Organics Unlimited is adding its name to the burgeoning list of produce industry leaders carving out solutions during this unprecedented time. The grower’s President and CEO, Mayra Velazquez de León, provided an update on the actions Organics Unlimited is taking, which include providing financial support to impacted individuals and communities during the COVID-19 crisis through its GROW program.

Mayra Velazquez de León, President and Chief Executive Officer, Organics UnlimitedGROW was created to support the communities we impact. During this time, it’s more important than ever to come together as a community, so to that end, we have deployed funds from our Disaster Relief GROW Sub-fund, which was designed for situations such as the current COVID-19 global pandemic,” stated Velazquez de León. “This will help to source additional personal protective equipment (PPE) and respirators for clinic providers to the uninsured and also support the San Diego Worker Assistance Initiative, which provides flexible resources to individuals impacted by layoffs and reduced working hours.”

Velazquez de León further stated that this fund can be used by low-wage workers to cover utilities and rent or mortgage during this health crisis to help prevent homelessness and offset the burden on social services, according to a press release.

Because of the global impact of the pandemic, Organics Unlimited is also closely monitoring the situation in its growing regions, including Mexico and Ecuador. The grower is also working to identify additional organizations to support people in these regions during this sensitive time.

“We, at Organics Unlimited, are diligently taking all necessary precautions as dictated by leading health agencies to protect our most valued resource—our team members. We continue working tirelessly with growers and distributors to maintain an uninterrupted global food supply chain,” Velazquez de León concluded. “Organics Unlimited will continue to play its role as a leading international produce supplier by growing and distributing its organic bananas, plantains, and coconuts to the United States, Canada, Japan, and elsewhere as needed during this ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.”
