WENATCHEE, WA - Retailers looking to make the most of Rainier cherry season can look no further than Stemilt. With decades of strategic planting across high-elevation orchards and later-growing regions, Stemilt offers the longest availability of Rainier cherries, ready to position retail partners for success from mid-June through early August.

Brianna Shales, Marketing Director, Stemilt

“No matter what happens with the crop, we have the best chance of having availability for retailers,” said Stemilt’s Marketing Director, Brianna Shales. “We have this uniquely extended cherry program because of our high and low elevation planting sites. The late-season orchards in Washington state mean Rainiers are not only available longer, but in strong volumes when other suppliers have wrapped up. The peak of our Rainier crop is happening now, setting the stage for standout Fourth of July promotions and National Rainier Cherry Day on July 11.”

In June 2024, Stemilt and Category Partners conducted an online survey of 2,001 U.S. consumers who confirmed they purchased cherries during the summer season. The goal of the study was to learn consumer perceptions, preferences, and behaviors regarding cherry purchases.

“Approximately 26% of survey respondents buy Rainier cherries, and 13% state these are their favorite type of cherry,” said Shales. "In the West region, only 9% of cherry category volume is Rainier, but 21% of consumers said it’s their favorite. In the Midwest, Rainier is only 6% of the cherry category, but 11% of consumers said it was their favorite. Demand for Rainier cherries is strong, and retailers should look to carry them consistently and fill this gap when supplies are available to do so.”

To ensure each pack of Stemilt World Famous Rainier cherries satisfies with the sweet flavor and texture they’re known for, Stemilt uses a dedicated Rainier cherry packing line that runs slower to prioritize gentle handling. Additionally, growing techniques like wind screens and bird control are critical to delivering the light colored, sweet, and juicy cherries consumers seek during their short window of availability.

“With Stemilt, retailers don’t just get great cherries, they get a partner with a plan,” added Shales. “We’re committed to helping our customers maximize this seasonal moment with the best Rainier cherries from tree to shelf. Retailers can also lean into storytelling and special promotions, such as limited-time social content and store events around National Rainier Cherry Day, to drive awareness and traffic.”

Stemilt offers Rainier cherries in multiple pack styles, including bags, 1 lb. clamshells, and top seal packaging, giving retailers the flexibility to meet shopper preferences while clearly distinguishing Rainiers from dark-sweet varieties. Their golden hue and naturally sweet flavor make them ideal for impulse purchases, especially when highlighted through eye-catching displays and digital marketing efforts.

“Every week, Rainier cherries can be sold for a premium price,” said Shales. “Rainier cherries appeal to a premium shopper, and we know from consumer research there’s often more demand than supply. That creates an incredible opportunity for retailers to promote and differentiate in-store and online.”
